Projects

Highlights from a few projects in 2024

Thanks to the generosity of contributing Roundup Riders, the Heritage and Trails Foundation has been able to make some important and significant grants for trail work and improvement projects around Colorado.  The foundation receives funding requests from many organizations and many U.S. Forest Districts

Colorado Youth Corps Association

The Southwest Conservation Corps, through the Colorado Youth Corps Association, worked on closing trail braids along the Chris Park Equestrian Trail System in the Columbine District of San Juan National Forest.

Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado

Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado ventured out to Colorado’s Eastern Plains to work on the Picture Canyon Trail in the Comanche National Grasslands in Baca County.

Wildlands Restoration Volunteers

The density of deadfall in the South San Juan Wilderness meant many closed trails. The Wildlands Restoration Volunteers used tandem sawing to clear the deadfall along these trails.

Continental Divide Trail Coalition

The Continental Divide Trail Coalition maintains the many mountainous trail areas along the trail System.  Packout from the Archuleta Trail project was made possible through the San Juan Backcountry Horsemen volunteers.  Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado teamed with the Continental Divide Trail Coalition for work along the Archuleta Trail.

Friends of Wilderness

The Friends of Wilderness, out of Steamboat Springs, replaced numerous sections of rotted and collapsing boardwalk along the Gilpin Trail in the Hahns Peak-Bear Ears District (Medicine Bow/Routt National Forest), reconnecting Gold Creek Trail to Mt. Zerkel Circle Trail.

Colorado Trail Foundation

Colorado Trail Foundation volunteers tackle important trail work near a new section of trail close to Fooses Creek near Salida, Colorado.

National Forest Foundation, Medicine Bow National Forest, Big Creek Ranch

For a special three-year project, the Heritage and Trails Foundation, is partnered in 2024 with Medicine Bow National Forest, Big Creek Ranch, the Rocky Mountain Youth Corps, and the National Forest Foundation to repair and rehab a section of Big Creek Trail along Big Creek that was made impassable by two massive wildfires and several landslides.

None of this work would be possible without the significant and generous support from Roundup Riders. Your dedication to the Heritage and Trails Foundation is having a profound and lasting impact on our state, the public trails that benefit Coloradans and tourists alike, and, perhaps most important, the development of our youth. The Heritage and Trails Foundation Board thanks you!
